How to lubricate van locks

If using a lubricant spray: Attach the spray nozzle (often provided) and spray a small amount directly into the keyhole. Again, insert and remove the key several times to distribute the lubricant evenly through the lock. Insert the key into the lock and turn it back and forth multiple times to ensure the lubricant spreads throughout the locking mechanism.

Lock and unlock the door a few times using both the key and internal mechanisms to make sure the lock operates smoothly. Use a clean cloth to wipe off any excess lubricant that may have dripped or splattered around the keyhole or door handle.

Choose the right lock lubricant

Choose the Right Lubricant:

  • Graphite powder is generally recommended for lock cylinders. However it can, especially on vans locks, clog up lock cylinders so we tend not to recommend graphite powder.

  • Silicone-based spray lubricants are good options because they are designed not to leave sticky residues that might attract dirt over time. These also act as a cleaner to help clean oil and dirt from the lock cylinder.

  • Avoid using oil-based lubricants like WD-40 for this purpose, as they can cause grime buildup over time.
