Preventing Rural Crime – Practical Tips to Protect Farms and Remote Properties

30 Jun 2025

Rural crime continues to rise in the UK, with farms and remote properties often targeted due to their isolation, lack of surveillance, and high-value tools or vehicles. At Garrison Locks, we specialise in security for rural properties, offering expert advice and trusted hardware to help you stay protected.

1. Secure Gates, Sheds, and Workshops with High-Quality Padlocks

Start with physical protection. Securing gates, sheds, barns, and workshops is your first line of defence. Use CEN-rated padlocks, weatherproof chains, and hasps. Look for Sold Secure Gold or CEN Grade 4–6 ratings for maximum resistance to attack.

Products like the ABUS Granit range or our own Garrison high-security padlocks are built for tough environments and resist bolt cutters, angle grinders, and corrosion.

2. Reinforce Doors and Windows on Outbuildings

Many rural thefts involve forced entry to side doors, barn doors or windows. Upgrading multipoint locks, fitting anti-snap euro cylinders, and adding window bars or internal grilles creates strong resistance to break-ins.

We recommend TS007 3-star cylinders and heavy-duty UPVC handles for key access points. Remember: rural thieves often carry tools, so reinforcement is essential, especially for outbuildings.

4. Use Alarms and Motion-Sensor Security Lights

Thieves avoid light and noise. Install motion-sensor lighting around sheds, driveways, and entrance points. Use wireless alarms and farm security systems that alert your phone if triggered.

Alarmed padlocks, smart sirens, and solar-powered security lights are ideal for remote areas where mains power isn’t available. Use PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors to monitor wider areas without false triggers.

5. Install CCTV for Remote Monitoring and Deterrence

Farm CCTV systems not only provide evidence but also act as a deterrent. Use high-resolution IP cameras, ideally with night visionmotion detection, and cloud storage.

Place cameras near entrances, fuel tanks, storage units, and machinery sheds. Add CCTV signage around your property – often enough to send criminals elsewhere. Choose weatherproof systems rated IP66 or above.

6. Mark, Record and Track Your Equipment And Assets

Mark all tools and equipment with forensic marking kits, etchings, or UV pen identifiers. Record serial numbers and keep photos for insurance claims and police reference.

Consider GPS trackers for larger vehicles or trailers. Some use magnets and internal batteries so they don’t need permanent installation. Register your items with the CESAR scheme or Immobilise database.

Rural crime is opportunistic and preventable. A layered approach works best – combining physical locks, surveillance, and asset marking. At Garrison Locks, we supply everything from padlocks and CCTV to ground anchors, cylinders, and multi-point lock kits.
