As summer holidays approach, many of us are preparing to switch off and relax. But before you do, it’s worth checking if your home security is ready too. Empty homes are easy targets, especially when small details give away that no one’s in.

Here are three often-overlooked but simple steps to reduce your risk while you’re away:

Lock Every Access Point!

This sounds obvious, but it’s often where people slip up.
Before you leave:

• Check all doors and windows, including upstairs.
• Lock sheds, garages, and side gates.
• Don’t forget sliding patio doors or old style locks, these are common weak spots or areas.

A quality lock matters. Choose systems that meet British Standards and resist drilling, snapping, and picking.

Be Quiet on Social Media.

It’s tempting to post airport selfies or sunny beach views. But broadcasting your holiday is the same as saying: “No one’s home.”

Instead:

• Wait until you’re back to share pictures.
• Don’t mention travel plans in public posts or stories.
• If you have a smart home system, consider using lights or blinds on timers to give the impression someone’s in.
