Fire doors play a vital role in slowing the spread of fire and smoke throughout a building. For a fire door to perform correctly, the gaps between the door and frame must be properly protected. FrameFit High Expansion (HE) Intumescent & Smoke Seals are designed to provide both fire and smoke protection while helping bring non-compliant fire doors back within acceptable standards.
They are an effective solution where fire door frames do not already contain intumescent seals or where additional fire and smoke protection is required.
FrameFit High Expansion (HE) Seals are combined intumescent and smoke seals fitted to fire door frames. Under normal conditions, the integrated brush or blade seal helps reduce the passage of cold smoke. During a fire, the intumescent material expands when exposed to heat, helping seal the gap between the door and frame.
This creates a barrier that helps slow the spread of flames, heat and smoke.
Many fire doors rely on intumescent seals to achieve their tested fire resistance. Without them, excessive gaps around the door can allow fire and smoke to spread much more quickly.
Smoke inhalation is one of the greatest risks during a fire, making smoke seals particularly important on doors designed to provide both fire and smoke protection.
FrameFit High Expansion Seals help:
Reduce the spread of cold smoke before the fire develops
Expand during a fire to seal gaps around the door
Improve the fire performance of compliant door assemblies
Help fire doors meet required gap protection
FrameFit High Expansion Seals are typically used where:
The fire door frame does not already contain intumescent seals.
Existing seals require replacement.
A fire and smoke seal is required in a single product.
Fire door inspections have identified missing or damaged seals.
They can also be used alongside FrameFit Low Modulus Seals where oversized gaps need correcting while maintaining the required level of fire protection.
FrameFit High Expansion Seals are available in a range of sizes to suit different fire door applications, including:
FD30 fire doors
FD60 fire doors
Various widths and thicknesses
Brush and smoke seal options depending on the application
Choosing the correct seal depends on the fire door specification, frame design and the required fire rating.
FrameFit High Expansion Seals have been tested to recognised fire resistance standards, including:
BS 476 Part 22
BS EN 1634-1
When installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, they are suitable for use on tested FD30 and FD60 fire door assemblies.
FrameFit High Expansion Seals offer several advantages:
Combined fire and smoke protection
Helps reduce the spread of cold smoke
Intumescent material expands during a fire
Suitable for FD30 and FD60 fire doors
Quick to install
Available in multiple sizes
Can be used with FrameFit Low Modulus Seals where oversized gaps need correcting
Not every fire door requires the same seal. Before selecting a High Expansion seal, check:
Whether the door or frame already contains intumescent protection.
The required fire rating (FD30 or FD60).
Whether smoke protection is required.
The size of the gap around the door.
If excessive gaps are present, these may need to be corrected using FrameFit Low Modulus Seals before or alongside the installation of High Expansion seals.
At Garrison Locks, we supply genuine FrameFit High Expansion (HE) Intumescent & Smoke Seals for a wide range of fire door applications. If you're unsure which seal is suitable for your fire door, our team can help you choose the correct size and specification.
